Bulldog Day Comes to The Citadel in March
Written by Kristina Contreras, Bullies 2 the Rescue
As you stumble across the Mighty Large Bulldog Statue situated at the stadium for the Citadel, you think…together we could do so much. I remember coming to Charleston roughly 4 years ago and as an avid bulldog rescuer, I couldn’t believe how many bulldogs there were here in the Charleston area. Bullies 2 the Rescue had been covering the area for many years but as the popularity of the breed grew, the need for rescue in the area grew also. Where there is such a love for an iconic breed, there comes a great need for more rescue resources. As soon as we got here, we were flooded with situations where bulldogs needed our help. Initially, we planned to transport them to our rescue home-base in in Charlotte, NC but we all came to realize that our presence is needed here, and the rest is history! We wanted to share our mission with the community so Charleston could not only fall in love with the breed as I have but also help support our ever-growing population of fosters who desperately need us. Bulldogs are costly and we cannot provide for them alone; it requires the support of our community to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home these sweet souls. The love of bulldogs here in Charleston brought, and continues to bring, great hope. The Citadel is a great school and such an iconic Charleston landmark. The first opportunity arose from a Facebook group where I discovered The Citadel was hosting a Beautiful Bulldog Pageant. I thought that would be a great way to introduce ourselves and do something fun and creative together. We currently host a similar annual pageant for the rescue in our NC area. Long story short, I didn’t get in touch with the right folks and it didn’t happen. The next year, I tried again and still, no luck. We had since adopted out to several Citadel alumni; yet another reason, together we could do amazing things. Three years later, a new committee has assembled and guess what? As they were talking through this effort, their first thought was Bullies 2 the Rescue… They wanted to Partner with us and our mission to save bulldogs! When we first got the call, we were super excited for the opportunity and at our initial in-person meeting, the ideas grew. We want to make a full day dedicated to the bulldogs, one that could grow annually, be an experience and celebrate the bulldog. The bulldog is a loving, affectionate, loyal and friendly breed. As the mascot of the Citadel, it just made sense. Bulldog Day 2020 is bringing people out to experience the BEAUTIFUL campus of the Citadel, watch some good Division 1 Citadel football, help save lives and more! The day will start off with a 5k fun run then on to the yearly awaited Beautiful Bulldog Pageant, the spring Citadel football game, fun, food and friends! We will have some great prizes for race and pageant winners. We hope to continue to build this partnership and use the opportunity to grow the mission of our rescue and utilize the opportunity to educate, rehabilitate and save more lives.
