Rescue is never easy and this Friday was no exception for the team at Eunoia Rescue. Friday morning, they were contacted that one of their dogs who had been happily adopted in 2016 was in critical shape at a local vet office. Happy Face, the terrier mix, was one of the first dogs Eunoia saved when they started in September of 2015. If fact, when I first met Alicia Williams in early 2016 to discuss working with the magazine and her wanting help from Lowcountry Dog to get word out about her new rescue, Happy Face was there and made a lasting impression.

Well this past week was not so happy for Happy Face. It appears that Happy Face was hit by car more than a week ago. His owner, who adopted him from Eunoia Rescue in Spring 2016 found the dog injured in their back yard on Monday, September 23rd. They took the dog to the vet the next day where they set the leg and gave him pain meds and antibotics. The vet bill was over $2000 and the owner only paid a small percentage. Not being able to afford proper care, they notified the rescue on Thursday evening. Eunoia picked up the dog from the vet and took it to their primary veterinary care, Paws and Claws Animal Hospital in Columbia, SC. Upon arrival, it was observed that Happy Face had a tibial fracture in his left leg and a necrotic wound on his right leg. Happy Face also tested positive for heartworms.. He will be hospitalized for 3-4 weeks requiring daily bandage changes and debridement. Estimates is $5,000+ for the leg issues alone, plus another $500 to treat his heartworms.

Happy Face’s owner was unable to explain what truly happened to the dog nor could they produce any vaccine or vet records since they adopted him over 3 years ago. Like most rescues and shelters, their adoption contract has provisions requiring proper vet care and heart worm prevention be given throughout the life of the dog. Is this dog the a victim of neglect as well as a freak accident? It is a sad thought that someone you trusted to adopt and care for an animal you saved would turn around and neglect them.
