Lowcountry Dog's Guide to Disney+
DISNEY+PIXAR+MARVEL+STAR WARS+NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ALL UNDER ONE SERVICE, SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!
On November 12th, Disney released their new streaming service Disney+ to compete with the ever growing number of streaming services available. We signed up, logged in and wanted to give our readers our suggestions for things to watch on the new service that every dog lover will not want to miss.
The service not only has classic Disney movies, but also Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and even content from National Geographic. It also has content from the Disney Channel and more.
LADY AND THE TRAMP
First, let’s start with one of the most anticipated remakes in the Disney catalog, the live action version of Lady and the Tramp. Directed by Charlie Bean and written by Andrew Bujalski and Kari Granlund. The film is a live-action adaptation of Walt Disney’s 1955 animated film of the same name, which was based on the Cosmopolitan magazine story of "Happy Dan, The Cynical Dog" by Ward Greene. The film stars Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux as the voices of the titular characters. It is dedicated to storyboard artist Chris Reccardi, who died in May 2019. The film was filmed in Savannah, GA which is an honorary part of the Lowcountry. Tramp is physically portrayed by Monte, a rescue dog. The pup was sent from a municipal shelter in New Mexico to Phoenix's HALO Animal Rescue in April 2018. Monte was beloved among staffers for his good behavior and sloppy wet kisses, says shelter CEO Heather Allen. Monte was scouted by a group of Hollywood animal trainers, she said, one of whom adopted the affable canine. Despite his recent foray into film, Allen said Monte still enjoys a happy, normal life. The film is excellently produced and directed and the animal actors steal the show. In the end the homeless dogs find families, including Tramp, which is a message we proudly support!
KITBULL
A traditionally animated short film directed and written by Rosana Sullivan, produced by Kathryn Hendrickson and Pixar Studios. This 9 minute short will have you reaching for the Kleenex with tears of joy and sadness. Kudos to the writer and producer for tackling this topic in a fun way. We laughed, we cried, we felt all the feels when watching this.
PLOT OVERVIEW: A kitten lives in the garbage cans behind a building in San Francisco's Mission District. While foraging for food on the streets, the kitten is offered food by a passerby but runs away, and sleeps in a cardboard box in the garbage. One day, a pit bull is moved to a doghouse behind the building. The kitten is initially very scared of the dog but slowly begins to connect with him by playing with a bottle cap. One night, after the pit bull is taken inside the building, he ends up getting heavily injured in a fight and is thrown back outside.
The pit bull then goes to help the kitten, who gets trapped in plastic pack rings after being scared by a storm, but the frightened kitten attacks the dog upon seeing his fangs. The devastated pit bull retreats to his doghouse, where he is later joined by the regretful kitten. The next day, the two escape the backyard just before the yard's owner can find them. Some time later, the kitten and the pit bull are playing out on the street when the kitten is found by the passerby from before, who adopts both of them.
HOW DOGS GOT THEIR SHAPES
This informative documentary developed by Stan Hsue, Timothy Kuryak and Joseph Stanton in 2016. Dogs are the most diverse mammal on land, and there's a story behind each dog shape. From head shapes to ear, tails, fur and more, every breed and mix in between is built for a specific purpose whether it be sniffing, hunting, running or snuggling.
WORLD’S GREATEST DOGS
“World’s Greatest Dogs”—has, despite its title, nothing to do with dog heroes of polar expeditions and such. Here we have heroes of another kind, canines who’ve usually been rescued from some unspeakable early life to become champion athletes. The sort shown doing impossible things—running jumps from rooftops to the arms of an owner-trainer as Jumpy (a Border Collie-Australian Cattle Dog mix) does. The 38-pound star is now acknowledged to be the world’s fastest dog-skateboarder. He’s not the only canine here whose prowess will keep your eyes glued to the screen.
