Good times in Givhans

My sister Sadie is on the temporary disabled list with a sore leg, so last week Mom and I set out to Givhans Ferry State Park by ourselves. It's not far from Summerville off of Highway 61 or off the interstate from exit 187. They have trails and picnic areas and best of all Edisto River access.

We started out by walking the River Bluff trail, which was fun because you walk along a ridge where you can see the river-maybe that's where the name comes from. I hadn't been to this park since last fall so it was interesting to see how changed a trail can seem in a different season. Everything was more canopied, which was helpful because it was hot. We didn't feel like the sun was beating down on us. Also I heard all kinds of unusual bird sounds, and I kept looking around trying to investigate but I could never find them. They were all hiding in the trees I guess. Sneaky.

We packed a lunch and had our choice of picnic tables. Next we went to the river. The "beach" area there is really neat but it’s a little steep getting down to it, which is no problem for me but I might have gotten a little over zealous to get down to the water. I *might* have pulled on my leash a little too hard,  but I don't really want to get into that. (Sorry Mom.) My favorite part of the river there is that it can be really shallow at times and there is a sandbar, so Mom can just walk out in middle of the river with me and play too! So she threw my bumper for me and we splashed and had a big time.

If you get the chance you should definitely check out this park with your best bud. The cost is only $2 per person and no charge for dogs! Be sure to bring plenty of water, and don't let your people forget their bug spray.

Is there a dog area or are dogs allowed to be leashless all over?

there is no off leash area at this park. we took some liberty when we got out in the middle of the river to take a few pictures.

I live 5 mins from there and always wondered what the dog situation was! Glad to know I don't have to drive all the way to James island anymore to have a good time with my dogs! Thanks for the info!! We will be checking this out this weekend! :)
